This is a shared writing lesson that I undertake with a group of six Year 5-6 students while other students are writing independently around the classroom. Note that two of the six students are English language learners. All students had been given permission by their parents/caregivers to participate in the filming.
The lesson has been filmed to illustrate the explicit teaching and instructional practices that I deem to be important in a shared writing lesson with Year 4-8 students.
“Keys” – Purpose:
As you look at the video, you should reflect on the content of Chapter 9 of Building Young Writers: Engaging and Motivating Year 4-8 Students in Writing: Timetabling and Organising an Instructional Writing Programme: Undertaking Shared and Guided Writing with Students (pages 85-89). The lesson has been filmed to illustrate the main points made about shared writing in this chapter.
