This is a sharing session based on Our Granny by Margaret Wild.
I undertook this workshop with a group of Year 5-6 students. The aim of the session was for each student to:
- have an opportunity to share their text with the teacher and other students
- get an opportunity to receive a response from others (including the teacher) about their text
- be encouraged to feel good about themselves as developing writers.
You will note that the responses mainly focus on the content of the texts.
Prior to the session, I had introduced and read the book Our Granny by Margaret Wild to the class and launched a subsequent writing lesson. Refer to that video for details of the lesson.
This culminated in each student selecting a person who is very special to them and writing about that person/what makes the person special. This group of students now share their writing with me and some of their classmates and receive a response from the students and I in a reasonably relaxed way.
Students in the session do not represent extremes of high or low ability – they were selected principally because of their anticipated confidence in a filming situation. All students had been given permission by their parents/caregivers to participate in the filming. Note that some students in the group do not speak English as their mother tongue.
